Katrina Carpenter was born to the late Mr. Rufus and Mrs. Bobby Jean Smith in Cross, SC. Raised in a household that valued education, she graduated from Cross High School in 1996 and earned a Bachelor's degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. She earned both an Associate and Bachelor's degree from Limestone College and a Master of Business Administration from Strayer University.

Katrina began her healthcare career in 2000 at Apria Healthcare in Mooresville, NC. After leaving Apria, she took a position in special education with the Berkeley County School System. Following the passing of her mother in 2011 due to ovarian cancer, Katrina transitioned to Fresenius Dialysis Center, where she served as a front desk supervisor.

Still mourning the loss of her mom and dad and now facing the heartbreaking loss of both her brothers to suicide, Katrina allowed her grief to fuel her passion for helping those in need. Recognizing that a single event or stroke of bad luck can push anyone to the brink of homelessness, Katrina founded Jean's Angels in 2015. This community-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supports underserved youth, single-parent families, the unhoused, and nursing homes across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida.

At Jean's Angels, the belief is that everyone deserves compassion, dignity, and access to basic necessities, regardless of their circumstances. Among their many initiatives, the Hygiene Outreach Services have made a significant impact. In 2022, the vision for Jean's Angels Mobile Laundry Trailer became a reality. In 2023, she built a mobile trailer featuring three showers, a laundry setup, and a barbershop, enabling the organization to provide essential services such as showers, haircuts, laundry, hygiene products, new outfits, and meals to the unhoused every week. In 2024, Katrina opened her day shelter that provides showers, a hot meal, and a place to sleep for the unhoused. In 2024, Jean's Angels served 32,563 individuals.

Katrina lives by the motto, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Beyond her work with Jean's Angels, Katrina enjoys traveling with family and friends, singing, cooking, and cherishing her role as a mother. She is actively involved with her church, BOLD Ministry.

Married to Dwayne Carpenter for four years, they are the proud parents of nine children.

About Katie's Krops

The idea for Katie’s Krops began with a 9-year-old girl and a 40-pound cabbage. In 2008 Katie brought home a tiny cabbage seedling home from school as part of the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program. She tended to her cabbage and cared for it until it grew to an amazing 40 pounds. Knowing her cabbage was special she donated to a soup kitchen where it helped to feed over 275 people. Moved by the experience of seeing how many people could benefit from the donation of fresh produce to soup kitchens, Katie decided to start vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to help feed people in need. Katie's Krops is a 501c3 nonprofit. The mission of Katie's Krops is to empower youth to start and maintain vegetable gardens of all sizes and donate the harvest to help feed people in need, as well as to assist and inspire others to do the same. There are Katie's Krops gardens growing across the United States empowering youth to give back. To learn more about Katie's Krops and how you can get involved visit: www.KatiesKrops.com.

Cultivating Compassion: The Heartbeat of Katie’s Krops

By: Jamie Gapinski

Nestled in the heart of Summerville, South Carolina, Katie’s Krops is more than just a non-profit; it’s a testament to the power of a remarkable mother-daughter duo. Katie Stagliano and her mom, Stacy, are the team behind this dynamic non-profit that fills stomachs and hearts. The journey of Katie’s Krops is a tapestry woven with threads of compassion, the power of love, and an unwavering mother-daughter relationship.

The Cabbage That Started It All

As a third grader, Katie Stagliano embarked on a journey that would sow seeds of colossal compassion and resilience. Her initiation into the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage program at her elementary school marked the beginning of a transformative chapter, where her first dream to grow food for others was cultivated. Guided and supported by her mother, Katie’s early passion for gardening took a sharp, philanthropic turn.

“At the heart of Katie’s Krops is a humble beginning – our backyard,” reflects Stacy. “I vividly recall that day she brought home that tiny cabbage seedling. I was standing outside her third-grade classroom, waiting to pick her up at the end of the day. I was standing there with our son, John Michael, and she stepped out with that tiny peat pot with three tiny green leaves poking out. I never imagined that such an ordinary moment would forever change our lives.”

From one tiny tiny pot, Katie cultivated a mammoth 40-pound cabbage. Motivated to help those in need, she sought Stacy’s approval to donate it. While connecting with Fields to Families, Stacy reached out to Tri-County Ministries, a local soup kitchen in North Charleston, South Carolina. Volunteers there transformed the cabbage into soup, pairing it with ham and rice, and Katie actively served the nourishing meal, feeding 275 people. The impact surpassed immediate sustenance, setting off a transformative chain of events.

From Backyard to Nation

By: Katie Stagliano

From its modest origins in a backyard, Katie’s Krops has burgeoned into a nationwide movement, with over one hundred gardens currently flourishing across thirty states, all led by youth. Every Katie’s Krops Garden reflects the hands-on commitment of thousands of children working fervently to combat hunger within their communities. The impact of this youth-led initiative is staggering, having grown and donated over a half-million pounds of produce since its inception in 2009. Katie’s Krop’s mission is to “empower youth to start and maintain vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to those in need, as well as assist and inspire others to do the same.”

Katie Stagliano takes immense pride in the dedicated young growers who have contributed to the organization’s remarkable journey. Beyond cultivating gardens, Katie’s Krops fosters community engagement through bi-weekly meal distributions at Summerville Baptist Church, supplying sustenance to anyone in need. This commitment to alleviating food insecurity was underscored in October 2023 when the organization celebrated 13 years of Katie’s Krops Dinners, serving over 105,000 meals to neighbors facing hardships. The exponential growth and impact of Katie’s Krops stand as a testament to the enduring power of youth-driven initiatives and their capacity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those experiencing hunger.

“Katie’s Krops started in my backyard and has now grown to over 100 gardens growing across the United States in 30 states. Every Katie’s Krops Garden is youth-run. Thousands of children across the country are getting their hands dirty working to end hunger in their communities.

Thank you to everyone who believed in my dream and has supported the efforts of our young Growers, our Katie’s Krops Dinners and our Outdoor Classroom. Together we are a powerful force and have made a tremendous difference in the last 14 years. I am so excited to see what the future holds for us and to continue our fight to end hunger, one vegetable garden at a time!”

Lowcountry Orphan Relief is a local non-profit that provides support services and aid to meet the needs of Lowcountry children identified as at-risk or suffering from abandonment, abuse or neglect. Our Founder, Lynn Young witnessed foster children being removed from their families often taken in the middle of the night or while at school and most were unable to get their belongings to bring with them. The court system can take up to two weeks to process these children; and during that time, the children have to make do with whatever clothing and personal items they had when they left their homes. In many cases, Lynn saw children staying in the same clothing often up to one week. Lowcountry Orphan Relief serves more than 300 organizations in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties, including the Department of Social Services, all local group foster homes, foster parents, local schools, and more. For each child, we are able to provide 2 weeks of new and like new clothing, pajamas, shoes, toiletries, school supplies and uniforms, as well as coats, books, stuffed animals, and new socks and underwear. We have a Distribution Center in North Charleston that fills Care Kits for children within 48 hours. Our daily average is 15-20 Care Kits per day, and we distribute an average of about about 4,000+ Care Kits per year.

Mission

The mission of Lowcountry Orphan Relief and Midlands Orphan Relief is to provide support services and aid to meet the needs of Lowcountry and Midlands children in South Carolina, who are identified by a LOR/MOR supported agency as suffering from abuse, abandonment and neglect.

Vision

The vision of Lowcountry Orphan Relief and Midlands Orphan Relief is that all South Carolina children are creatures of God who have intrinsic value and who represent the future of the nation. LOR and MOR believe that all children should be treated with respect and that their sense of self-esteem should be nurtured by providing them with the basic necessities of life.
